UPDATE: How Facebook Got Me a J-O-B!

Yes, Facebook, Twitter and other social media can get you a job. IF and only if, you use it properly. Here’s how it worked for me.

October 20 - TweetDeck - Using My Network

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License by alex.ragone I have a lot of faith in people’s desire to help others; so, I posted my resume, changed my status, and added a box about my desire to find a job in Buffalo. I posted the same on Twitter, made a link to my resume in Google Docs, and then went about my life like it never happened. That is an important step because if I spent the rest of my time constantly posting about my desire for a job, I believe I would exhaust my social bonds. I also continued with the traditional routes: searching for jobs, sending resumes and networking.

One of my friends asked a question of her network [paraphrasing]: “Looking for people successfully using social media.” One of her friends responded saying “I am looking for someone who’s interested in a job using social marketing.” My friend introduces me to her friend and viola, I’ve got an interview.

Getting to the interview phase is the most important part because then it’s up to you, not some pencil pusher who sits behind a desk, looking at papers all day [hey, wait, that's me!]. It took 3 months to find a job in my field that way, which is about how long it took me the last time I went looking for a job before social media; so, don’t use them as a short cut. It’s just a way to meet people.

UPDATED: Using social networks can help you get almost any job – even President of the United States.
